The Summer Olympics and tensions over the war in Ukraine are likely to make Paris a tempting target for a variety of hacking attempts, including from adversarial countries, France’s top cybersecurity official said on Monday. French officials, including Mr. Strubel, are in Washington this week for consultations with cybersecurity officials. The Paris Olympics will run from July 26 to Aug. 11. The opening ceremony of the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, was marred by a cyberattack that caused internet disruptions. Security companies quickly blamed Russia, and the Fancy Bear hacking group tied to Moscow’s intelligence services, for that attack.

SOELDEN, Austria (AP) — Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel left the finish area of the season-opening women's World Cup race in tears Saturday after becoming the first skier to be disqualified for a forbidden type of wax on her skis. A rule in effect this season forbids the use of fluorinated wax in the pre-race preparation of skis. FIS banned the substance from its competitions after years of debate about the potential harm fluorinated wax can cause to health and the environment. We are not trying to cheat, because that is the worst thing for me,” Mowinckel told Norwegian broadcaster TV 2. Peter Gerdol, the women's race director of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, said all skis were tested for the banned substance after both runs.

U.S. Skier and 2023 Women's FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Overall Champion Mikaela Shiffrin poses for a photograph during an interview with Reuters in Manhattan, in New York City, New York, U.S., April 26, 2023. The Vail, Colorado, native has exceeded even the most lofty expectations that were placed on her shoulders when she joined the World Cup circuit as a highly-touted 16-year-old. Now, having broken Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark's 34-year-old record of World Cup wins, she wants to put it beyond reach for the foreseeable future. Shiffrin, who has managed to avoid any serious injury setbacks in her career, said she saw complacency as the biggest threat to her health. Shiffrin will look to continue her dominance of the sport when she competes in the season-opening giant slalom at Austria's Soelden resort on Saturday.

For four-time Olympian and gold medal-winning ice hockey star Angela Ruggiero, pushing for more media attention and sponsorship dollars for women's sports comes naturally. Today, through her company, the Sports Innovation Lab, she's dedicated to changing that. Ruggiero's Sports Innovation Lab on Tuesday announced a partnership with banking giant Ally to create the Women's Sports Club, a coalition of major brands and media that will work to tackle some of the challenges in buying women's sports inventory and to elevating investment in women's sports. More than 20 global brands that buy and sell sports media and sponsorships are coming together to drive media spending to women's sports. The Women's Sports Club will meet at significant media and sporting events throughout the year, beginning with the South by Southwest event next week in Austin, Texas.

Feb 8 (Reuters) - Italian Elena Fanchini, who won the downhill silver medal at the 2005 Alpine skiing world championships, has died aged 37, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) said on Wednesday. Fanchini, who took part in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, was forced to withdraw from the 2018 PyeongChang Games after being diagnosed with cancer. "At the end of a serious illness, Elena Fanchini passed away at her home in Solato (near Brescia)," FISI said in a statement. Fanchini also participated in six World Championships and made four World Cup podiums, all in downhill, including two victories in Lake Louise, Canada in 2005 and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy in 2015. The victory puts the 27-year-old just three wins away from the all-time record held by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden, who captured 86 World Cup wins between 1974 and 1989. Eclipsing Vonn is the latest history-making achievement by the twice Olympic gold medallist and four-time overall World Cup champion, who could potentially end her career with more than 100 victories on the ski racing circuit. She ended that season as the Olympic, World Cup and world champion in slalom and her profile grew considerably as media appearances and sponsorships began to pile up for the amiable 18-year-old star. A powerful and precise skier, Shiffrin is the only athlete to win World Cups in all six disciplines - downhill, super-G, alpine combined, giant slalom, slalom, and parallel. Her mettle intact, she went on to win her fourth overall World Cup title later that year.

De Bruin's suspension started on Sept. 28 and runs until Sept. 27, 2025. The world's fastest trains -- from China to France

Chogo/Xinhua/Getty ImagesAs well as boasting the longest network of high-speed lines in the world, China now has the fastest scheduled trains on the planet. A statement of intent by China’s booming railway technology industry, the Fuxing trains have been developed from previous generations of high-speed trains, which were based on technology imported from Europe and Japan. The design also forms the basis of the Siemens “Velaro” family of high-speed trains, which has been sold to Spain, Russia, Turkey, China and to Eurostar for its second generation international trains. Europe’s first dedicated high-speed network is still its best known and most successful, reaching out well beyond France’s borders. Frecciarossa services operate across Italy’s T-shaped high-speed network, linking Turin, Milan and Venice in the north with Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples.
